I was born & raised in northern California. I grew up Scuba Diving, water skiing, white-water rafting, surfing, & of course intense, competetive swimming, which began at age 4.
When I was 3 years old, I suffered severe third degree burns down the entire, outside of my left leg. The Surgeons recommended 'swimming' to help aid in the healing of the scar tissues & damaged ligaments.
I'm thankful that my Mother was proactive in getting me on the local swimteam & I never looked back!
I have a lot of empathy for your children. I can understand being picked on, feeling self-conscious, being judged & being embarassed, as a child. I want your child to feel comfortable & safe with me during their lesson time. Swim lessons are made to be fun & creative, while learning.
I was also instrumental in pursuing year round swimteam for my 3 daughters at age 5.

Every child works at their own pace initially. We are continually building on what we are learning. There is no 'timeframe' to complete a skill, no matter how small.
I am extremely creative & detailed when I teach, as well as age appropriate. I leave no room for confusion, as to the concepts & skills being taught. I want your children to learn correctly. I also want you, the parent, caregiver, etc.. to be educated along the process of learning to swim.
I use several fun reinforcing toys & positive reinforcers to reward an attempted or accomplshed desired task. These tools have proven successful because my students are 'confidence building' via the smallest, sometimes 'prompted' tasks, to the final goal. (Water Safety & Beyond)
Parental involvement with the instructor & child is crucial to your child's success in learning this critical lifesaving skill.

🐟When is the youngest I can begin lessons for my child?"🐟 ~ It's never too early to learn to swim! ~ It's never too early to expose your child to the water! As long as your child has expressed interest in the pool, take them in with you, WITHOUT a flotation device. If you have access to a pool, take your little newborn baby with you. They are not scared......we are......make it fun....otherwise, they feel our energy & will develop an unneeded fear = consequence (Relying on floaties)

🐟 Floating 🐟 ~ Before you begin learning strokes, you should first learn the basics of floating in the water. Floating helps you to get used to the habit of moving through water properly. Floating helps to keep your body on the surface of the water. Our body experiences a vertical buoyant force when immersed in water (gravity) & floating helps to keep your body in a horizontal position & STAY SAFE. Floating is important because if you accidentally fall in the water you will be able to float, relax, and BREATHE on the surface until you are rescued. YOU CAN FLOAT EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO SWIM. I teach a few different floating stratagies.
🐟 Breathing 🐟 ~ Understanding & controlling how we breathe is crucial. Correct breathing is just ONE foundation for water safety. It is sometimes VERY scary for children to breathe, mainly for the fear of the 'bad' sensation of water up the nose. If your child refuses/is fearful to put his head in the water & gets pushed in the pool, will he know what to do & how to breathe, while getting to safety? If your child is not comfortable breathing while swimming & going underwater, they won't be able to enjoy it & want to learn new things. Your child should relax, hold his breath (not with his hand), while he slowly puts his face in the water. (keep holding breathe) Then, lift head up or to the side, slowly, out of the water, blowing out/off any water that could have entered nose & mouth. (like blowing out bubbles from BOTH nose & mouth) Then, take a another full breath & hold it, before putting your face back in the water...MORE TO FOLLOW

"Bicycle legs" are our SAFE legs we use when we cannot touch the bottom. AKA "Treading water or egg-beaters" for us adults.

Understanding the concept of 'pencil' legs and understanding the difference between being a 'safe pencil' vs. an 'unsafe pencil', detemines our decision to either voluntarily, 'pencil jump', to the bottom to fetch a 'fun' treasure OR ultimately drown. What if unsuspectedly your child was thrown in feet first & panicked. Would he know how to get back to the surface safely? Because of this type of vertictal angle, 'pencil' legs will NOT save your life, in this manner. INSTEAD, verticle 'pencil' legs take you quickly to the pool bottom.
When to use pencil legs safely needs to be clarified immediately, as they are NOT safe legs, when we cannot touch the bottom. 'Pencil' legs are SAFE when swimmimg freestyle & backstroke because we are horizontal on the water, just like if we were floating.
